Sexual behaviours vary across cultures, influenced by myths, religion and many unscientific beliefs. There have been rising sexual assault rates in the last 3 decades in the academic, social political and clinical realms. Overall amongst the world, rates have been decreasing since 1980. Dangerousness: the capacity of a person to physically, psychologically or morally harm oneself or others. Estimates severity, imminence, predictability and likelihood of harm. Risk: the probability for a person to commit harmful acts in the future. Assumption that high risk offenders are motivated by overly strong sexual desires and cannot control their sexual impulses therefore commit crime. There is a belief that these individuals cannot be changed. Paraphilia: sexual interest in an activity that includes another person without their consent. Paraphilia or personality disorders may lead one to commit violent sexual assault against children. Often sexual offenders are simply punished and put in prison without treatment before being released back into the public.
