Chapter 7: structure and operation of the criminal courts. People don"t understand the criminal courts because their activities aren"t as visible as police. Canada does not have a uniform court system. Majority of cases are non-violent (impaired driving, theft, common assault) Each province and territory has 2 levels of courts: provincial and superior. Judges appointed by that province or territory. Problem solving courts: specialized courts designed to divert offenders with special needs from the criminal justice system (ex. Community courts, drug courts, mental health courts, etc. ) Offenders may avoid incarceration by abiding to specific conditions. 3 attributes of p-s courts are: focus on addressing the underling problem of offenders, victims and communities, interagency and interdisciplinary collaboration, accountability to community. Courts have potential to improve quality of life in community, increase family familiarity to court processes and improve community satisfaction w/ response to persons in conflict. Rehabilitation is focus, personalized, collaborative, offender focused, problem focused.
