Motherhood doesn"t neatly fit into a system of values that promotes high productivity and a fast pace. There is no perfect way to raise a child and there is no finished product : role ambiguity. In our diverse society, there should be many possible ways to mother children. But sometimes this ambiguity or freedom of choice is associated with stress and feelings of guilt that impede enjoyment and fulfillment of the task. Early childhood educators can sometimes inadvertently add to the stress and guilt that mothers feel: some educators felt quite strongly that mothers should be at home with their children unless they absolutely had to work. Expert advice can sometimes undermine a mother"s confidence and make her feel that she can never learn how to do things right. Many authorities on parent education are acknowledging the importance of parents" own expertise, and of working with them in a way that is collaborative and empowering.
