Document Summary

Ecology- the study of how organisms interact with their environment. E(cid:272)ology"s p(cid:396)i(cid:373)a(cid:396)y goal is to u(cid:374)de(cid:396)sta(cid:374)d the dist(cid:396)i(cid:271)utio(cid:374) a(cid:374)d a(cid:271)u(cid:374)da(cid:374)(cid:272)e of o(cid:396)ga(cid:374)is(cid:373)s. Four main levels of ecology include: organisms. At the organismal level, researchers explore the morphological, physiological, and behavioural adaptations that allow individuals to live in a area: populations. When biologists study population ecology, they focus on how the numbers of individuals in a population change over time. Population- a group of individuals of the same species that lives in the same area at the same time: communities. Community ecologists ask questions about the nature of interactions between species and the consequences of those interactions. Research might concentrate on predation, parasitism, competition, or explore how groups of species respond to fires, flood, and other disturbances. Community- consists of the species that interact with each other within an area: ecosystems.
