BLG 10A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 25: Folliculogenesis, Ovarian Ligament, Corpus Luteum
Document Summary
Internal genitalia = ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus and vagina (fig 27. 13, 27. 15) Ovary = female gonad (fig 27. 14: produce: gametes (ova) and sex hormones (estrogens and progesterone, suspended and held in place in peritoneal cavity by several ligaments: Ovarian ligament anchors ovary to the uterus. Suspensory ligament anchors ovary to the pelvic wall. Oogenesis = process of forming mature ova takes years to complete (fig 27. 20) Fetal period: oogonia = diploid stem cells rapidly multiply by mitosis. Surrounded by cluster of endocrine cells become granulosa cells. A single dominant follicle (from a group of ~20 developing follicles: continues meiosis i forms two haploid cells that are dissimilar in size. Polar body = smaller in size may undergo meiosis ii and form two smaller polar bodies but these cells are non-functional and degenerate. Secondary oocyte contains nearly all the cytoplasm from the primary oocyte.
