RELS 161 Chapter Week 5: Berger reading
Document Summary
The jet traveller in the third world is a good metaphor for modernity. He views travel by how many miles he can fly while a villagers views it by how many bullocks can he push the cart by. Modernization is the juxtaposition of this new world over the old worlds of traditional man. The modern day jet traveller is so much more powerful than a villager because of the array of choices he has. Take the airplane instead of a bus, but now there are many more choices such as moral, ideological, and most importantly religious choices. Modernity is largely associated with choices and the definition of modernity is the ratio of inanimate to animate sources of power. Modernity is not an either/or affair and is highly associated with technology. Levy believes modernity is associated with several traits such as economics, politics, psychological, etc. and it is not the airplane example.
