Document Summary

They are easy to identify with a ct scan, and influence brain function with pressure. These tumors are often benign and therefore are surgically removable with little risk of further growth. Meningiomas are a type of encapsulated tumor and they account for about 20% of all human brain tumors. Aside from meningiomas, most brain tumors are infiltrating. Since infiltrating tumors grow diffusely through surrounding tissue, they are typically malignant. This means they are difficult to remove and continue to grow if any of the tissue happens to remain after attempts to remove the tumor. Gliomas are a type of infiltrating tumor that is derived from glial cells. Metastatic tumors do not originate in the brain. Essentially, infiltrating cells are carried to the brain by the bloodstream from some other part of the body. Metastatic tumors account for 10% of tumors in the brain. Many metastatic brain tumors originate as cancers in the lungs.
