PSYC 271 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Central Nervous System, Dura Mater, Arachnoid Mater
Document Summary
Central nervous system (cns: divided into the brain and spinal cord (within skull and spine, 12 pairs of cranial nerves that lea(cid:448)e cns fro(cid:373) (cid:271)rai(cid:374); o(cid:374)ly o(cid:374)es that do(cid:374)"t proje(cid:272)t fro(cid:373) spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid (csf) manufactured by choroid plexuses; capillary networks into ventricles prote(cid:272)ts cns. Is absorbed into sinuses (large channels) in the dura mater and into blood stream. Hydrocephalus results when csf flow is blocked (too much fluid), which causes intracerebral pressure and brain damage. Made up of either neurons or glia. Clusters of cell bodies are called nuclei in the cns, and bundles of axons called tracts. Clusters of cell bodies called ganglia in ans, and bundles of axons called nerves. Axis 1: anterior: towards the nose/front, posterior: towards the tail/back. Axis 2: dorsal: towards surface of back/top of head, ventral: surface of chest/bottom of head. Axis 3: medial: towards midline of body, lateral: away from the midline. Horizontal plane: slice parallel to the ground.
