Most of the nerves in the pns project from the spinal cord, but there are 12 pairs of exceptions: the 12 pairs of cranial nerves, which project from the brain: numbered in sequence from front to back. Blood-brain barrier: blood-brain barrier- a mechanism that impedes the passage of many toxic substances from the blood into the brain, some large molecules that are critical for brain function (ex. Glucose) are actively transported through cerebral blood vessel walls. Anatomy of neurons: neurons- cells that are specialized for the reception, conduction and transmission of electrochemical signals. Interneurons- neurons with a short axon or none at all: function is to integrate neural activity within a single brain structure, not to conduct signals from one structure to another. *nucleus has two different meanings- it is a structure in the neuron cell body and a cluster of cell bodies in the cns. Other terms: superior- top of the primate head.
