Need to belong: a motivation to bond with others in relationships that provide ongoing, positive interactions. Mutual attachments promoted survival for our ancestors. Bonds of love can lead to children for heterosexual people. When we feel like we belong we feel autonomy and competence. Functional distance: how often people"s paths cross. Interaction enables people to explore similarities, sense another"s liking, and to perceive themselves as a social unit. Anticipatory liking: expecting that someone will be pleasant and compatible. Refers to the tendency for all sorts of novel stimuli to boost people"s rating of them. Men more than women ranked attractiveness as important in a mate. Matching phenomenon: the tendency for men and women to choose as partners those who are a good match in attractiveness and other traits. People usually approach someone whose attractiveness roughly matches or slightly exceeds their own. Physical attractiveness stereotype: the presumption that physically attractive people possess other socially desirable traits as well.
