Document Summary

A change in behaviour or belief to accord with others. The key is whether your behaviour and beliefs would be the same apart from the group. Obedience: acting in accord to an explicit command. Acceptance: sincere, inward conformity, sometimes follows compliance. Participants asked to estimate how far a light moved. Because of conformity/acceptance, we seem to perpetuate false beliefs. Suggestibility: things happen in waves: e. g. copycat suicides, interpreting events differently after hearing from others. Participants asked to judge which line matches the standard. People conform even when there is no obvious pressure to do so (e. g. no rewards/punishments) E. g. doing as others do; fads such as tattoos. Participants asked to shock a learner for incorrect responses. Test what happens when demands of authority clash with demands of conscience. It is easier to abuse people who are distant/depersonalized. Closeness and legitimacy of authority: compliance increased when experimenters were physically present.
