Forer"s study showed that participants found accuracy in ostensible personality test results, even though the same results were given to all participants. Barnum effect: individuals find accuracy in false personality assessments because these types of results cater to just about everyone. Considerations for a good personality test: reliable, valid, generalizability, relevant to behaviour (i. e. , meaningful application, evidence for the above. Type of reliability/method for measuring: test-retest, parallel forms, split-half, cronbach"s alpha. Cronbach"s alpha should be high (i. e. , 0. 7 0. 8) and upwards of 0. 9 when creating a test to distinguish between individuals (e. g. , iq test). Types of validity: construct validity, face validity, criterion validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity. Establishing construct validity is an important step in rationalizing the theoretical support for your scale. Usefulness of face validity: participants are more likely to be motivated and answer honestly when they see the relevance of the task reflected in the assessment, helps to generate items in the scale development phase.
