Paul broca and carl wernicke identified language areas in the frontal and temporal lobes. Recall the throwdown between b. f. skinner and noam chomsky. Psycholingustics: psychological study of language. The goal is to identify the psychological processes by which humans acquire and process language. Here are four major questions/areas of focus in this field: comprehension. How do people understand written and spoken language: speech production. How do people produce speech, both physically and mentally: representation. How is language represented in the mind and the brain: acquisition. In this class we will focus on the first three areas. Phoneme: shortest segment of speech sound that has a definable meaning. If changed, a phoneme can change the meaning of a word. It"s composed of /b/, /i/, /t/. For instance, the words cot and caught both have 3 phonemes.
