Language: a system of communication using sounds or symbols that enables us to express our feelings, thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Paul broca and carl wernicke identified language areas in the frontal and temporal lobes. Recall the throwdown between b. f. skinner and noam chomsky. Psycholingustics: psychological study of language. The goal is to identify the psychological processes by which humans acquire and process language. Here are four major questions/areas of focus in this field: comprehension. How do people understand written and spoken language: speech production. How do people produce speech, both physically and mentally: representation. How is language represented in the mind and the brain: acquisition. In this class we will focus on the first three areas. Phoneme: shortest segment of speech sound that has a definable meaning. If changed, a phoneme can change the meaning of a word. It"s composed of /b/, /i/, /t/. For instance, the words cot and caught both have 3 phonemes.
