Document Summary

Analyze the nature and development of our sense of self. Rene descartes believed everything to be wrong except that which he was able to prove; this was his foundational truth. Our ability to reason ourselves as independent of those around us, is limited when we are born and grows as we age. A test used to test sense of self is the rouge test. It is used for both people and animals. This is done by studying three steps of self awareness. : guided movements: young infants follow movements with the purpose of moving them, reacting differently to images of themselves compared to other images. Many species of animals cannot pass the rouge test, and humans are first able to pass the rouge test between the ages of 15 and 24 months. Development of self continues as language and vocabulary skills increase, as children begin to refer to themselves and describe their personal characteristics and physical observable traits.
