Document Summary
Motivation- a general term for phenomena that affect the nature, strength, and persistence of an individual"s behaviour. Drives- reversible internal conditions that affect the nature, strength, and persistence of an individual"s behaviour. Motivational states are energizing; they direct an animal to act and direct behaviour toward a goal. For example, hunger (an internal state) motivates eating (an external action). Electrical stimulation of the brain (esb)- applying small electrical shocks to different parts of the brain. Central state theory- the theory that states that various drives correspond with different neural activity in different parts of the brain. The hypothalamus serves as one such hub, or central drive system. The hypothalamus senses internal states, such as levels of glucose, hydration, salts, and internal temperature; responds to hormone levels; and is connected to the pituitary gland, so it can orchestrate the release of hormones. Drive-reduction theory- proposes that a drive produces an unpleasant state that causes an organism to engage in motivated behaviours.
