Chapter 6: doing science in the real world. To get investors, vertex has to get results, but they need money to pay for researchers and equipment first. Research has to satisfy both business and science criteria. It needs to lead to desired results, answer good questions, and look like work that will be profitable. Academic scientists face similar pressures as industrial scientists: they protect their work to prevent others from getting an advantage, they design research programs that lead to significant and novel results. Scientists are privileged to have a lot of control over the use of government funds. This is because they have almost exclusive ability to judge the merit of their work: scientific research, then, takes place in social worlds that have some autonomy and isolation from other worlds. Scientists value recognition by peers more than monetary rewards: scientists value what is inside the core of science rather than what is outside.
