This right exists as soon as the work is created and does not need to be registered to be in effect. Copyright lasts the life of the creator + 50 years: trademarks: distinguish the goods or services of a business. (tm sign). Trademarks must be registered and last 15 years but they are renewable: patents: rights granted by the government to an inventor to prevent others from using the invention without the owner"s consent. Patent rights can be protected for up to 20 years after the application has been filed. They can only be applied to new inventions or new improvements of existing inventions.
