Human geography requires an ability to understand places and regions as components of a constantly changing global system with deep historical roots: built into every place and region is the legacy of a long sequence of major changes. Evolution of the modern world-system has exhibited distinctive stages; each has left a legacy in different ways on particular places, depending on their changing role within the world system. Places and regions are part of a world-system (a term coined by historian immanuel wallerstein) that has been created as a result of processes of private economic competitions and political competition among states. These states are dependent on each other and over time the competition lead to uneven development in regions.
