Smes account for approximately 98% of all business and employ 50% of the workforce. 98% if canadian businesses have fewer than 100 employees. 80% of smes consists of fewer than 10 employees. Canadian smes contribute to society through job creation, the provision of products and services, taxes, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Therefore they have a huge impact on the canadian economy, communities, and the natural environment. Although smes face different pressures than large companies, smes also face pressure from customers and suppliers, and they are often faced with the same regulations as large companies. Additional conflict of interest issues arise if the sme is family owned such as issues with human resources functions, such as hiring, firing, and succession planning. Family-owned businesses often get a bad reputation for things such as preferential treatment, governance problems, and feuding. Study found that family-owned firms respond more to institutional pressures than large publicly traded organizations.
