Some major state festivals included everyone, both slave and free, citizen and metic, male and female, adult and children. No doubt their sympathies and interests were felt to be particularly caught by the scale of the celebrations and the quality of the athletic, poetic and dramatic performances. Festivals included processions, sacrifices, and cultural events, such as performance of dithyramb, tragedy and comedy, and athletic competitions. Every month, certain days were set aside for particular gods. Major festivals occurred on an annual cycle. Some festivals were peculiar to particular groups, others were festival for the whole polis.
