Document Summary

In sexual reproduction, 2 dna molecules from different sources are brought together. In bacteria, rarely are 2 complete chromosomes brought together; usually the union id of 1 complete + a fragment of another. Conjugation: contact and fusion of 2 different bacterial cells, after fusion, one cell, a donor, sometimes transfers genomic dna to the othr cell, the transferred dna may be part of or(rarely) all the bacterial genome. Sometimes plasmids are transferred--> can contain genomic dna and can bring into the recipient cell: any genomic fragment transferred by whatever route may recombine w the recipient"s chromosome after entry. Transformation: bacteria cell takes up a piece of dna from the external environment and incorporates it into its own chromosome. Fast-dividing: take up little space, divides asexually (2-4-8-etc) Prototrophic - wild type bacteria (grow and divide on minimal medium--> substrate containing only inorganic salts. Auxotrophic mutants can be obtained from a prototrophic culture--> will not grow without cellular building block adenine.
