Mendel developed his theory several decades before chromosomes were actually observed/discovered under the microscope. Mendel was influenced by physicist christian poppler and botanist franz linger. In 1857 mendel began breeding garden peas to study inheritance. Reasons he chose to study peas: in many varieties, short generation time, large # f offspring in each mating, could control mating between plants, characteristics with only 2 alleles. Character: a heritable feature that varies among individuals. Mendel achieved cross pollination be removing immature stamen of a plant before they produced pollen and then dusted pollen from another plant onto the altered flowers. True breeding: over many generations of self pollination, had produced only he same variety as the parent plant. F1 plants self pollinate and white trait reappears in f2 generation.
