ANAT 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Ear Canal, Sphenoidal Sinus, Ethmoid Bone
Document Summary
6-7 the bones of the skull, vertebral column, and thoracic cage make up the axial skeleton. The axial skeleton creates a framework that supports and protects the brain, the spinal cord, and the organs in the subdivisions of the ventral body cavity. It also provides an extensive surface area for the attachment of muscle that (1) adjust the positions of the head, neck, and trunk; (2) perform respiratory movements; and (3) stabilize or position elements of the appendicular skeleton. The bones of the skull protect the brain and guards the entrances to the digestive and respiratory systems. The skull is made up of 22 bones: 8 form the cranium, and 14 are associated with the face. This surrounds the connection between the brain and spinal cord. On either side are the occipital condyles, the sites of articulation between the skull and the first vertebra of the neck. It also anchors muscles associated with the tongue and pharynx.
