PSYO 252 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Ambivalent Sexism, Stereotype Threat, Gender Role
Document Summary
The nature of the problem: persistence and change. Implicit association test (iat) 1. measures implicit racism toward african american: older versus younger people, men versus women, etc. Fig 5. 2 development of explicit versus implicit racial preferences. Stereotype threat can lead to increased arousal, trigger attempts to suppress negative stereotypes, impair working memory, and cause individuals to feel dejection-related emotions or to engage in negative thinking. Causes of the problem: intergroup, motivational, cognitive, and cultural. Ingroups are groups we identify with; we contrast these with outgroups. In the robbers cave study, boys divided into rival groups quickly showed intergroup prejudice. This competition can be real or imagined: relative deprivation: feelings of discontent aroused by the belief that one fares poorly compared with others. Social identity theory: participants categorized into arbitrary minimal groups discriminate in favour of the ingroup. Culture and social identity: cultural differences can influence social identity processes.
