PSYO 121 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Subtyping, Social Influence, Cognitive Dissonance
Document Summary
Ultra social species- hymenopter, termites, naked mole rats, humans. They form societies in large number to divide labour and cooperate for mutual benefits. Animals solve problems by hurting or helping each other. Simplest way to solve the problem of scarce resources is by being aggressive. A behaviour with the purpose of harming another. Frustration-aggression hypothesis: animals aggress when their desires are frustrated. Aggression is a response to a negative affect. On hot days people feel irritable and uncomfortable leading to higher chance of violence. Not every negative affect leads to violence- ex)disgust= less aggressive. Biology and culture play important roles in determining if and when people will aggress. Testosterone makes people feel powerful and confident -- and sensitive to provocation and less sensitive to signs of retaliation. Men with high self esteem= more violent. Women can still be aggressive when protecting a resource. Women can be more aggressive in causing social harm but not physical.
