Chapter outline: state creation, geopolitics and geopolitik, unstable states, grouping of states, the role of the state, geography of elections, geography of peace and war, our geopolitical future. The rise of the nation-state: nationalism: the belief that a nation and a state should be congruent; can lead to unity but also internal and external conflict. A nation is a society untied by a delusion about its ancestry and by common hatred of its neighbours: related concept: sovereignty (authority, sovereignty: authority over territory and population of a state, vested in its government. Contemporary nationalism: contemporary political map includes many states that contain two or more nations, states that approach the nation-state ideal are found primary in europe: e. g. Exploration, geography, and colonialism: most empires began as a result of exploratory activity, colonialism: economic, social, and political activity in explored areas that became colonies were determined by and for the exploring power, expand territory beyond the nation-state.
