Document Summary
Nursing care of the child with a life-threatening illness or. A life-threatening condition is one in which there is a considerable likelihood of death even though treatment may prolong the child"s life or the child may have a complete recovery from the illness or injury. A threat to a child"s life may be expected, as in a chronic condition or progressive disabling disease. More often the death is unexpected due to an unintentional injury, the leading cause of death in children, or an acute illness. How children, parents, and siblings cope with the threat will depend on the anticipated or unanticipated nature of the event and the conditions surrounding the child"s admission to the hospital. When death results from a chronic condition or terminal illness, the child and family generally have time to adjust to episodes of life-threatening crisis and impending death.
