Law: law is the body of rules that regulates the conduct of members of society and is recognized and enforced by the government. Ultra vires: refers to actions that are beyond the authority of a government. When a government passes a law in an area over which it does not have authority (latin for beyond the powers) Many rules regulating our conduct are not part of law. Two reasons for this: not officially recognized by the government as laws applying to all members of society, violation does not involve a penalty or other legal consequence imposed by the government. Ex. rules of private clubs and club members. Moral (cid:448)alues that go(cid:448)er(cid:374) a perso(cid:374)"s (cid:272)o(cid:374)du(cid:272)t are (cid:374)ot part of the la(cid:449) although moral convictions and legal rules often overlap: functions of law. Definition of law does not indicate a wide range of functions served by the law. Assigns duties and powers to its various branches.
