Police raids of homosexual bars were common in ny and usa cities: this time bar patrons fought back instead of enduring humiliating treatment. Stone wall riots are viewed as the spark of the gay liberation movement and commerated. No event in history, with perhaps the exception of the french revolution deserves more than the stonewall riots": common to divide gay history into two epoch before and after stone wall. The claim that stonewall sparked the gay liberation is a construction story initiated by gay liberation activists to encourage further growth. Sf jan 1965 six homophile groups agreed to organize a new years day costume ball: organizers informed the police of the upcoming events progressive heterosexual religious leaders and thought the police had agreed not to raid. Sf had a culture of civility w accommodation btwn police and deviants: provided them w a stake in the community that constrained their behaviour, most well treated gays.
