Finding that a relationship exists doesn"t indicate info about the degree of assoc (correlation: many things are related but few have perfect correlation. Can visualize differences in strength by means of a scatter plot or scatter diagram graph that shows the way. Closer to the line of best fit the stronger the relationship is. Positive correlation exists when high scores on the y also tend to get high scores on the y inds who get low scores on x get low scores on y. Because strength is independent of direction we can say that +1 and -1 are equally as strong. Add products of deviations to see if the positive products or negative products are more abundant and sizeable. Positive products indicate cases in which variables go in the same directions. Negative products indicate cases in which the variables go in opposite directions. R = sigma (x-xbar)(y-ybar) / square root sigma (x-xbar)^2(y-ybar)^2 = sp / square root ssxssy.
