Crime and deviance as labels and social constructs. Labeling theory: because some acts that were once illegal are now legal, and vice versa, you should understand that while the study of crime and deviance is about rule-breaking behavior, it is not just about rule-breaking behavior. In this sense, crime and deviance are universal: on the other hand, different human societies pronounce different acts and behaviors criminal or deviant. Social constrcutionism labeling theory applies specifically to crime and deviance. what constructionists like to call an objectivist approach to crime and deviance: objectivist accounts of crime and deviance focus on the behavior itself. It is also often the case that objectivist and constructionist researchers study different kinds of crime and deviance. armed robbery and the like. binge drinking, lap dancing, and prescription drug abuse. It is easier to break rules as a stranger in town than in the community where you grew up.
