Attachment and love are necessary components of flourishing relationships (must be accompanied by purposeful positive relationship behaviours) Infant attachment maladaptive parental behaviours - chaotic, unplanned attempts to meet a child"s needs; lack of physical availability adaptive parental behaviours - responsiveness to a child"s behavioural cues (smiling) Believed to be causally linked to functional behaviour and emotional experiences of children. Adaptive and maladaptive parental behaviours lead to development of attachment system (regulates proximity seeking behaviours connecting infants and caregivers in physical and emotional space. Child with insecure attachment to at least one caregiver may have difficulty in cooperating with others and regulating their mood. Children with sound attachment systems become more appealing to caregivers and other people. Strange situation assessment - child exposed to novel situation in company of his caregiver, caregiver removed and reintroduced to situation twice --> reactions of child are assessed. After this render the child as one of: secure attachment, insecure-avoidant attachment, insecure-resistant/ambivalent attachment secure attachment.
