Throughout history, emotions were seen as very negative (e. g. the beast within ) Emotion-focused coping: regulating emotions surrounding a stressful encounter. Emotional approach: active movement toward, rather than away from, a stressful encounter, involving two related but distinct processes: emotional processing: attempts to understand emotions, emotional expression: free and intentional displays of feeling. Emotional avoidance: active movement away from a stressful encounter. Women with breast cancer who engaged in emotion-focused coping perceived health as better, had lower distress, and made fewer medical appointments. People who indicate a preference for a certain approach cope better when placed under circumstances that allow them to use this process. Emotional processors require information about what they are feeling. Emotional expressers require letting their feelings out.
