22 views2 pages

Document Summary

Epilepsy: characterized by changed sensation, mood or consciousness / by seizures: causes of seizures unknown until eeg experiments demonstrated that different types were associated with different electrical rhythms. In partial seizures: abnormal electrical discharges are restricted to one / a few brain regions, associated with sensations / emotions (simple ps) or acute loss of consciousness (complex ps) In generalized seizures: abnormal electrical discharges occur widespread, characterized by abnormal body movements (tonic-clonic seizure), falling down without muscle tone (atonic seizure) and loss of consciousness (absence seizure) Duration of epileptic attack correlates with duration of abnormalities found in eeg. Largest abnormal spikes come from right occipital cortex suggests production of attack located here. Brief changes in an eeg signal in response to a discrete sensory stimulus. Largely excitatory and inhibitory graded potentials (epsp"s and ipsp"s) that triggers on dendrites. Not easy to detect because signal is mixed in with other eeg signals from the brain.
