Document Summary

There are so many variations in how stimulus can be presented, which provides our first indication that object recognition is complex. Your recognition of objects is influenced by the context in which you encounter them. Object recognition is heavily influenced by the stimulus itself, by the features that are in view. Processes that are directly shaped by the stimulus are sometimes called data-driven or bottom up processes. Recognition is also influenced by your knowledge and expectations, relying on your knowledge for recognition is sometimes called concept-driven or top-down processes. Recognition might begin with the identification of visual features in the input pattern (e. g. vertical lines, curves, etc. ) There are specialized cells in the visual system, or feature detectors that fire whenever the relevant input is in view. Focusing on features might allow us to concentrate on elements shared by the various stimuli despite apparent diversity.
