Document Summary

Virtually every human knows and uses at least one language. The complexity and communicative power of human language is not matched by any other species. Language allows transmission of information and acquisition of knowledge. Language involves translation from ideas to sounds and then back to ideas. Language speakers and listeners must grasp reliable patterns to understand what is being said. Variation in sound is produced when airflow from the lungs, through the larynx, and up through the nose and mouth is interrupted or altered. Voicing: a buzzing vibration produced by rapid opening and closing of vocal folds. [z] sound is voiced, but [s] is not. Manner of production: how the airflow is restricted: different manners of restriction produce different sounds. Place of articulation: where the airflow is restricted: bilabial: closed lips, [p] and [b, labiodental: place top teeth close to bottom lip, [f] and [v, alveolar: place tongue just behind upper teeth, [t] and [d]
