Chapter 2.6 MPS
- Guthrie:
o What they learn is a connection between a stimulus and a response (not a
connection between two stimuli)
The role of practice and repetition:
- What practice does, says G, is that it provides an opportunity for making he same
response in a wide variety of situations
o But an act is learned in a single occurrence
o The need for repetition comes from the need for executing the act in a variety of
circumstances
- G:
o this means that Pavlov’s dogs learned to salivate in response to a buzzer in a
single trial
Movement produced stimuli (MPS)
- G:
o a stimulus is a combination of sensation, where learning involves associating a
response to a combination of stimuli
- A response is not just a single final act:
o it involves a sequence of actions
(MPS’)
- MPS’ give rise to other responses which can have effect on muscles, glands, tendons,, etc
(giving rise to more stimuli)
Contiguity through MPS:
o The sequence between the initial presentation of a stimulus and the occurrence of
a response is filled with a sequence of responses and stimulation that results in
MPS’
o Each of these responses and their corresponding MPS are in contiguity (occur at
the same time)
Habits:
- Learning does occur in one trial but this does not mean that a complex behavior can be
learned in one trial
- A number of trials might be required before all have been associated as they need to be:
when they are all linked so a combination of stimuli lead to a combination of responses,
what we have is a habit (a stereotyped, predictable pattern of responding)

Chapter 2. 6 mps: what they learn is a connection between a stimulus and a response (not a connection between two stimuli) G: this means that pavlov"s dogs learned to salivate in response to a buzzer in a single trial. G: a stimulus is a combination of sensation, where learning involves associating a response to a combination of stimuli. A response is not just a single final act: it involves a sequence of actions (mps") Mps" give rise to other responses which can have effect on muscles, glands, tendons,, etc (giving rise to more stimuli) Contiguity through mps: the sequence between the initial presentation of a stimulus and the occurrence of a response is filled with a sequence of responses and stimulation that results in. Mps": each of these responses and their corresponding mps are in contiguity (occur at the same time)
