Task of psychologists: to try to understand and predict human behavior, done in many ways. Social psychology: the scientific study of daily life. After haiti earthquake, the help of canadians through fundraises, benefit concerts, bake sales, etc. were very high. Neil bauman: volunteered to travel to haiti for a month leaving behind his family (was willing to pay the price to help those in need) Taught that the only redemption from their sins was to experience death by fire: do this and be reborn, suicides took place. All of this examples present many questions about human social behavior: social psychological research helps give us some reasonable explanations of why these things happen. Social influence = a big factor in social psych: we are all influenced by others, some include: persuasion where one deliberately tries to change another person"s behavior. Direct social influence play a major part in things such as conformity, attitudes and group processes.
