Definition : objective scientific study of the way people"s thoughts, feelings and behaviours are influenced by the real or imagined presence of others. Concerned with the construal (perception, comprehension and interpretation of the social environment) In murder trials, the perception that the jury has of the evidence is what is important not so much the evidence itself (o. j simpson) Na ve realism the naivety that people believe that they perceive things as they really are. Impedes conflict resolution because you see the other side of the argument as biased while you think you are the one with clarity. Unlike philosophy, it uses empirical data in order to make statements. Folk wisdom / common sense is used by the media to explain social psychological phenomenon"s; they are almost always incorrect. We do no learn from our mistakes / disillusions that common sense explains human behaviour repeated suicidal cults.
