PSYCH 2B03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Physical Attractiveness, Agreeableness, Normative Social Influence
Document Summary
Peoples" personalities change throughout their lifetime, but fundamental traits remain relatively unchanged. People show a strong tendency to maintain distinctive patterns of behaviour throughout life. Rank-order consistency: those individuals who are higher in a particular trait relative to others tend to maintain their relative position throughout life. E. g. individual who is more extraverted than others in preschool is more likely to be more extraverted than others in college, and then in old age. High personality trait correlations between different periods of life. It is possible to predict adult life outcomes on the basis of personality ratings in childhood. Many aspects of the individual that affect personality remain constant for years. Three basic aspects: positive emotionality (extraversion precursor), negative emotionality (neuroticism precursor), effortful control (conscientiousness and agreeableness precursor) Heterotypic continuity: the effects of fundamental childhood tendencies of temperament change with age. E. g. a shy child hides behind his mother while a shy adult avoids conversing with strangers.
