PSYCH 2B03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Anal Stage, Falsifiability, Unconscious Mind
Document Summary
Defense mechanisms are the techniques used by the ego to contain dangerous thoughts and impulses. Defense mechanisms are not infallible; they sometimes fail. This failure can be seen in freudian slips or parapraxes as one would say something embarrassing, accidently. This phrase said accidently shows us what the unconscious mind is thinking about at the moment. The ego allows sometimes, deliberately, to release some of these dangerous thoughts as a sort of venting. However, this happens with humour or wit such that it becomes a more appropriate context. Anxiety is an unpleasant feeling that can result from the outside world or inner mental, unconscious, conflicts. In any situation, the id provides wants, the superego provides the morale and the ego attempts to find a rational judgement to abide. Obeying either part of the unconscious mind will leave an emptiness in the other part. Psychic conflict leads to anxiety and arises from the battle between id and superego.
