Psychological disorder: psychological dysfunction within an individual associated with distress, dysfunction, or deviance. Phobia: psychological disorder characterized by persistent fear of an object or situation. > breakdown in cognitive, emotional, or behavioural functioning. > greater deviation (not culturally expected) = greater abnormality. > distress, dysfunction, and deviance must all be present in order to diagnose (not alone!) For some disorders, suffering and distress are absent; manic episodes. Mos psychological disorders are simply extreme expression of otherwise normal emotions, behaviours and cognitive processes. Failure of one or more mechanisms to perform their evolved function and the dysfunction produces harm or distress. Take into account whether this is beyond the individual"s control or not. Prototype - how a disease or disorder matches the typical profile of the disorder when most or all of the symptoms, which are recognized by professionals, are present. Don"t use objective material for physical diagnoses but use it for mental.
