Most commonly diagnosed depression is major depressive episode. Some patients compare their mania to a continuous sexual orgasm. Average duration of an untreated manic episode is 2-6 months. Individuals who experience depression or mania are said to be unipolar because their mood remains at one (cid:862)pole(cid:863) of the usual depressio(cid:374)-mania continuum. Individuals who cycle between depression and mania are referred to as bipolar. Mixed features: experiencing depression at the same time as anxiety. Recovery with retaining some symptoms = partial remission. Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia) shares symptoms of mdd, but differs in course. Depression remains relatively unchanged over long periods of time, sometimes 20 or 30 years. Depressive mode that continues for at least 2 years. Patient is not symptom free for more than 2 months at a time. 20% of pateints with mdd report chronicity for the episode. 22% of people suffering from pdd eventually experience a major depressive symptom.
