Document Summary

A zygote is formed of two gametes - the father"s sperm and the mother"s egg. Most cells in the body have 46 chromosomes (two sets of 23) In-vitro fertilization can be used to form a zygote. Egg is fertilized and then put into the mother"s uterus; hoping that they"ll become implanted in the uterine wall. Meiosis: cell division resulting in gametes (sex cells) The female gives one of her xx chromosome and the male gives one of his xy. Mitosis: cell division resulting in bodily cells. Each chromosome carries genes - the basic unit of heredity (codes for protein and all aspects of development) Autosomes: the first 22 pairs of chromosomes. X chromosome is much larger than y chromosome. Dna (deoxyribonucleic acid): codes for specific genes. Chromosome consist of genes, which are made up of dna. Strand of dna contains pairs of nucleotide bases which provide information on how to code the protein that will determine the body"s genes.
