Roots of memory laid down rst few months after birth ex: baby kicking mobile example from lecture. Brain structures responsible for initial storage of memory develop by 6 months of age. Structures responsible for retrieving these stored memories develop later, into the second year. Parts of hippocampus not mature until 20-24 months. Development of memory during rst 2 years of life re ect growth in two different brain regions. As hippocampus and prefrontal cortex mature, memory skills improve. As children grow, they use more effective strategies for remembering. Children"s growing factual knowledge of the world allows them to organize information more completely, and therefore to remember better. Memory strategy: an action to promote remembering; ex: highlighting words in textbook. Memory strategies helps to maintain working memory, help transfer it to ltm, or retrieve information from ltm. Children begin to use these strategies early.
