Raccoons are mostly nocturnal, and their paws have adapted to become so sensitive that they don"t require vision often to discriminate food items from non-food items. Cognitive psychologists study the adaptive functions of mental activities; adaptationists. Break down large-scale cognitive processes into adaptive problems/tasks, and look for the adaptations that solve those problems. "higher" mental processes (tasks that the mind needs to accomplish to do its job): Attraction to certain stimuli and aversion to others.
