Deviance atypical thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that are outside the standards of what others are doing. Distress person experiences intense negative feelings due to their behaviour. But: person can be free of distress and still not psychologically healthy (e. g. bipolar patients) Dysfunction behaviour interferes with the person"s ability to function properly in their daily lives (maladaptive) But: person may choose to stop functioning as means of protest (e. g. a protest) Dsm-5 diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (5th edition) Categorizes and describes mental disorders so clinicians have a common set of criteria to apply diagnostic labels. Allows researchers to talk to each other about mental disorders using a common language. Since 1st edition in 1952, there have been many changes. Hoarding has been added to dsm-5, while homosexuality hasn"t been included since dsm-ii. Dsm-5 began shift from a categorical classification model to a dimensional classification model. Categorical classification model classified items differ from each other in kind.
