PSYCH 1XX3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Assistive Technology, Stabilizing Selection, Heritability
Document Summary
A change of gene frequencies over generations. Biological traits that help an individual to survive and reproduce in its habitats. Exist to help one thrive in their physical environment. Serves function in the life of an individual. Mental processes are adaptations: selective attention, memory encoding, memory retrieval. These processes all evolved through natural selection. Individual differences: within any population there is variation among individuals for any given characteristic, differential reproduction, effe(cid:272)t i(cid:374)dividual"s (cid:272)ha(cid:374)(cid:272)es of survivi(cid:374)g a(cid:374)d reprodu(cid:272)i(cid:374)g, heritability, genetic bases which are heritable, these characteristics represent their parents. Differential survival and reproduction of organisms as a result of the heritable differences between them. Favourable heritable traits are selectively transmitted across generations. Selection against any sort of departure from species-typical adaptive design. Tends to keep traits stable over generations. Favours traits that are not typical, this is when evolution changes can be observed. Survival of the fittest can describe natural selection. Can act one mate-finding to produce sexual selection.
