PSYCH 1X03 Chapter Notes - Fall 2018 Chapter 3 - Classical conditioning, Learning, Habituation
Document Summary
Relatively enduring change in the mechanisms of behaviour that occurs due to experience. Learning may occur, yet not be immediately reflected, in performance (latent learning). Learning should occur over time whether or not it is being continually expressed in behaviour. Maturation behaviours that develop/change as one matures, often independent of experience. Orienting response an automatic shift o attention toward a stimulus or event. Important for focussing attention on unfamiliar stimuli, which may signal sudden danger or unexpected opportunity. Habituation a decrease in response to a stimulus or event as it is repeatedly presented without any consequence. Allows one to ignore irrelevant stimuli that may otherwise be distracting and divert your limited attentional resources. Habituation and sensitization are considered non-associative learning, because they modify an existing stimulus-response relationship, rather than create a new one. Reflex takes place independently of the conscious experience of the subject. Associative learning allows organisms to learn relationships between stimuli and events.
