Arbitrary association: the word used to represent an object is not constrained by any characteristics of the thing itself, allowing the word chosen to be completely arbitrary. Or else there won"t be different language. Onomatopoeia[ ]: words whose sounds are associate with their meaning: productive. Productive: language is designed to use a small number of components to produce and understand a wide range of symbols. Language has a limited set of rules that can be used to combine a limited a set of symbols in infinite ways. Allow its user to combine a series of representative symbols to express novel meaning in grouping of words that may never have been presented together before: rule-governed (regular) Rule governed: with each language, rules about what makes sense still exist despite the productive nature of language. Morphemes: the smallest units of sound that contain information. Phonemes: the smallest unit of sound in a language.
